How Many Steps Are in a Mile?
It depends on your stride, and your stride depends on your height
A mile is 5,280 feet. The average woman's walking stride is about 26 inches, which works out to roughly 2,405 steps per mile. The average man's stride is about 29 inches, so around 2,203 steps per mile. Most generic converters quote a single figure somewhere between the two, which is why your watch never quite agrees with them.
This calculator estimates stride as 41.3% of height for women and 41.5% for men, the standard pedometer method. It is accurate to within a few percent for normal walking; running lengthens your stride and lowers the step count per mile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Steps, miles and walking distance
How many steps are in a mile?
About 2,405 steps for a woman of average height (5'4") and about 2,203 for a man (5'9"). The range across adults is roughly 2,000 to 2,600 steps per mile, because stride length depends on height. A woman of 5'0" takes closer to 2,600 steps per mile; a woman of 5'10" closer to 2,200.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
Roughly 4.2 miles (6.7 km) for the average woman, and about 4.5 miles for the average man. At a moderate 3 mph pace that is around 80 to 90 minutes of walking in total across the day.
Why do women take more steps per mile than men?
Stride length scales with height, and women are on average about 5 to 6 inches shorter than men, so each step covers a little less ground. A woman and a man walking the same mile side by side will record different step counts on their watches, and both are correct.
How many steps is 3 miles?
About 7,215 steps for the average woman and 6,609 for the average man. Multiply your own steps-per-mile figure from the calculator by 3 for a personal number.
How long does it take to walk a mile?
About 20 minutes at a moderate 3 mph, 24 minutes at a casual 2.5 mph, and 15 minutes at a brisk 4 mph. Hills, stops and pushing a pram all add time. The calculator shows all three paces for whatever step count you enter.
Is 10,000 steps a day enough for weight loss?
For most women 10,000 steps a day burns roughly 300 to 450 calories, which is meaningful over a week but is not a weight-loss plan on its own. Pair it with strength training and a modest calorie deficit. Our steps-to-calories calculator gives a personalised burn figure, and the TDEE calculator turns your daily steps into a full maintenance-calorie estimate.
